# Set and retire golden runs

> A golden run is the reference a workflow's failures are compared against.

**Who can do this:** Tenant Admin. Department Managers for workflows in their own department.

A **golden run** is a completed run you trust, saved as the change-control reference for a workflow. Failure diagnosis compares failed runs against it step by step.

## Promote a run

1. Open a completed run.
2. Select **Set as Golden Run**.
3. Explain **Why is this the new golden?** (at least 8 characters).
4. If you're replacing a golden run, optionally comment on the previous one.
5. Select **Promote**.

You can also promote from the agent's page under **Agents > Manage > Golden run**.

## Retire without a replacement

1. Go to **Governance > Golden Runs** and select the workflow.
2. Select **Retire without replacement**.
3. Enter a **Reason for retirement** (at least 8 characters) and confirm.

The workflow is then flagged as missing a golden run until a new one is promoted. **Governance > Golden Runs** lists every workflow with its current golden run, who promoted it, and the full history. Filter by **Set** or **Not set** to find gaps.
